Decent but disjointed. ( )

A book that shows the dark side to genetic research. Mostly good with a few times that detail was given where it didn't need to be given and a few times where it should have been given (like what year it was and what the world was like, to out things in perspective). A good editor would be able to work through that. Characters need a little more depth. ( )

The best thing about this book is the strong central character of Donna Bailey, a veterinarian in the Badlands of North Dakota. Her character comes across as very real and complex. I also liked how Sullivan paced the book, with the growing concerns about the animal and human health issues realistically displayed.

I do have a gripe though. The Triple E company is virtually unknown to the people who live around it. This sort of plot device is common in books and it always bugs me. The company, as portrayed in the book, would have hundreds of employees who would live in the area---and they had been located there for 10 years. I can't see all the residents around there as not knowing anything about the company. This is a minor issue and probably won't bother anyone else. ( )

As with so many technothrillers, this one starts with an interesting premise and development, but then falls into a simple burn-shoot-and-chase plot for the second half. ( )

This was a great read - and the author really seems to know her stuff on the scientific issues. The book reminded me a bit of Jurassic Park (which I also loved). The first half is spent trying to figure out the mystery and the second half turns into a faster-paced action story. The ending felt a bit anti-climactic though, but this wasn't enough to make me take a star off. Recommended. ( )
