Nase is working undercover as a cabdriver, trying to catch an inveterate hijacker, when he first hears about Purnell Whitmore. In Roxbury, where hope is a rare commodity, Whitmore had been a shining star, a straight A student, all-sports, active in his church, full scholarship to Yale. When his lifeless body is found in a garbage dumpster, the whole neighborhood mourns. When suspicion emerges that a white police officer is responsible, it is primed to explode.
Nase's well connected pal Buck Hanrahan offers to land him a job as a special investigator with Mayor Conor O'Conor's independent commission, convened to investigate both the murder and general charges of brutality against Frances X. :"Dapper" Flanagan's police department. Bucky wants inside information, and Nase isn't interested, until he meets Lynn Daniels, a provocative, bourbon voiced lawyer on the mayor's panel. Lynn just might keep him from dwelling on a too recent letter that began "Dear Nase." And Nase is as loath as Bucky to see a decent man like Flanagan railroaded. ( )
