hard book to finish ( )

A cowboy struggling to make it on his family farm in Wyoming. A brother who has lost all his money on Wall Street and moves back in. A fellow rancher who no one likes in the valley and is the arch rival to the main lead character. A city slicker doctor who wants to learn how to ride her horse, and to fall in love again. These are the main characters of The Last Cowboy. It features Jordanna, as the lovely doctor from Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Slade as the tough as nails rancher who is struggling to make his monthly mortgage. Slade has been burned from a marriage gone wrong; and he feels that he is not ready for another woman in his life. To save his ranch he must win the Tetons Endurance Ride, but when he gets gravely injured what will happen to his new fond love and his ranch?

The characters are stock characters that you will find in every romance book. The cowboy who slowly falls in love with the lady, while ignoring his feelings at the same time. The evil man who attempts to break them both, and many more. Fans of this type of book you will find a story that you know well. ( )

Slade McPherson is used to doing things the way that he wants them done. He runs his ranch and trains other riders for endurance races, but he has control over exactly how he does each of these things. He doesn't give lessons to women and he doesn't need help on his ranch. But when he finds himself in pretty dire straights, economically, both of these tenets will be challenged.

The first will be shaken by the arrival of Jordana Lawton, whose whole being screams "City Gil" to him, but who turns out to be an ER doctor who is serious about endurance riding. So serious in fact that she doesn't balk when he double his normal training fee to try and scare her away (even though it will burn a major hole in her meager post-divorce savings).

The second intruder to Slade's normal way of life is a lot harder for him to deal with. His twin brother, who was raised by an uncle and has enjoyed a much fancier lifestyle as a stockbroker, shows up at Slade's door. He's lost his job in the financial crisis and expects to be able to start up an in-between income assisting Slade at the Ranch.

Watching Slade deal with these sudden changes to his routine makes for a very entertaining plot. You definitely feel for him, he's stretched himself as thin as possible in order to make ends meet and it's hard for him to expend any energy on anything except getting things done and now he has to deal with a both Jordan and Griff. Luckily for him, and us, Jordan is impossible not to like. She's an independent woman with a kind touch with everyone she meets (on two and four legs). She's not about to let anyone stand between her and what she loves. Whether that's Slade trying to keep her from lessons or someone trying to keep her from succeeding in the actual endurance race. Jordan is resilient but still very fun. It's easy to see why she shakes up Slade's world and makes for a great romance.

I really liked McKenna's writing and the fact that there was so much going on in this plot. It's fast moving and enjoyable. I will definitely be checking out other books in her back catalog.

Slade McPherson is a rancher on his family ranch. The ranch has been in his family for over 100 years. Slade & Griff inherited when their parents died at 6 years old. Slade stayed on the ranch and is Aunt & Uncle raised him and ran the ranch till they died at 17.
Griff went with a different uncle to New York who was a stockbroker. Griff had lived the high life in New York. He made millions before he lost it all on the stock market collasp.
Slade has been riding endurance rides and is either #1 or #2 in most races. He trains other riders for endurance races. He had a bad divorce 4 years ago to a New York City girl. His new student he does not want to train because she is a woman and her horse is a mare. Slade tells her double the amount for training and boarding her horse 2000. a month.
Jordana Lawton is an emergency doctor & has sport clinic. She had lost most of her money in the stock market and knows the 2,000 a month will hurt but it is her dream to compete at the top level. So she puts up with Slade attitude when she see's how gentle he is with her horse.
Griff comes back to the ranch after he lost everything. Their is hard times for both twins. Slade does not want him their, since a few years Griff denied loaning him money to help the ranch and he has never put time or money into the ranch.
Slade gets injured and can't ride in upcomming race and he needs the prize money to save the ranch.
It is a modern story dealing with people losing their home's & savings with the down fall of stock market and banks closing. I liked the story and wanted more hopefully Griff will get his own story. I like Lindseys writings and will read more of her work in the future. I was given this ebook in exchange for honest review. ( )
