I think this is one of the first that I ever read of hers, and it one of the simplest and highly enjoyable, romantic stuff for a rainy day- a definite reread if feeling low.

I don't know why this novel affects me so much, but I cry every time I read it. It is the story of an aristocratic Russian woman who married when she was a foolish girl, then survived social disaster and the revolution to finally find a safe harbour. ( )
