Book description
The author worked as a gamekeeper on an estate in Hertfordshire for 68 years. His story takes us back to an idyll of rural England, when the land was tended by many, the villages were full of industry, the Big House full of guests and the kitchens proudly filled with local produce. Rogers summons up an Arcadia of self-sufficiency, bird-song and wild-flowers, but he is also too honest not to recall the appalling poverty and ignorance, and his own brutal father. Despite his half-suppressed memories of the First World War and his tough physique, he was a remarkably gentle man. Whether he is rescuing flamingoes from the ice, helping a young woman to give birth in the fields or simply doing his rounds, his company is enchanting.

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0907871615, Paperback)

A game-keeper tells of his sixty-eight years on the same Herefordshire estate. Although a traditionalist, he doesn't pretend that life was always easy, and he is sometimes sharply critical of former masters. From this truthful account, we get an unsentimental yet affectionate picture of life on a semi-feudal estate.
