Verso la fine della guerra di Liberazione la Regia Aeronautica ebbe in dotaione alcune decine di "Spitfire" V, cui seguirono nell' immediato dopoguerra un centinaio di "Spitfire" IX. I piloti italiani fecero così la conoscenza con il caccia che fino a quel momento era stato loro avversario. ( )

Lo "Spitfire" Fu progettat da Reginald J. Mitchell e collaudato il 5 marzo 1936 da Mutt Summers. Il caccia rivelò subito di possedere ottime qualità di volo ed il contratto per 310 esemplari, siglato il 3 luglio 1936 avviò la produzione di serie.
