NCLA Review -The fifty-four devotions that make up this book lead the reader through the stories of the shepherds of the Old Testament starting with Abram. Johnson says that his intent is for families to study these stories together with the hope that children will start a life-long habit of Bible reading. To model how to use this book, the author has the “Smith family” reading the Christmas story from Luke together and discussing its implications in the first chapter. Coming full circle in the Epilogue, another Christmas Eve has arrived and the Smith family, much wiser and more aware of what God expects from his Shepherds, is once again reading the story from Luke with new insight. Each chapter ends with questions, which are mostly about contents of the story. Some of the situations and language seem to be too difficult for small children, but every member of the family should derive some benefit. Rating: 3 —AMB ( )
