Thirteen-year-old Bethany Hamilton lives in Kauai, Hawaii with her surfing mad family and best friend Alana Blanchard. The day after competing in a surfing competition in 2003 the girls go surfing with Alana's father and brother at Tunnels Beach in Kauai. Whilst resting in the water a 14-foot tiger shark attacks, severing Bethany's left arm just below the shoulder. An ambulance meets them on the way to the hospital, Bethany has lost her left arm and 60% of her blood. When Bethany recovers she gets back in the water and learns to surf with one arm, but finds things really difficult. She visits Thailand and witnesses the devastation caused by the 2004 Tsunami. There Bethany discovers a greater purpose; to make a difference in the lives of others.

Really inspirational movie. Fantastic to learn that Bethany herself performed all the one-armed surfing stunts in the movie. ( )
