OK spy story just before war with Nazis. A bit racy in spots. ( )

Furst is great at choosing niche pieces of history and use them as his backdrop. Here, he uses Germany's info ops efforts in France in the late 1930s. Add a Hollywood movie star, with origins in Austria and acting in Paris, you have a potentially interesting plot. While still a good read, the book didn't exactly thrill, maybe because the protagonist's main role is that of a courier, not a spy. And of course, you have the love affair that seems a must in Furst's books. ( )

creepy how the description of peoples attititudes and behavior of pre-German invasion of Paris eerily resembles current climate of American attitude towards the new administration l... or maybe it's just me ( )

This book is classified as a spy thriller, and on that point this book disappoints, but as a piece of historical fiction I liked this book. Having read other novels in the Night Soldier's series this one didn't have much suspense, but it did have great descriptions of European cities and a feeling of impending conflict. The main character isn't all that interesting but the supporting cast and overall themes are and they make up for that deficiency. Furst's novels in general give his reader a great appreciation for the actions and feelings leading up to WWII that you don't read about in history books and this book does that well.

Epigraph
In the 1930s, the Nazi government of Germany, bitterly
resentful at having lost the 1914 war, determined to
destroy its traditional enemy, France. Force of arms lay
in the future, but a small bureau in the Reich Foreign
Ministry undertook operations to weaken French morale
and degrade France's will to defend herself. This strategy,
using ancient and well-proven methods, was know as
political warfare.
Dedication
First words
In Paris, the evenings of September are sometimes warm, excessively gentle, and, in the magic particular to that city, irresistibly seductive.
