I didn't think the pacing was super fast, but the plot moved along at a comfortable rate. The world of the Mage is an interesting one, and seemed unique to me. There was lots of sexual tension between Zoe and Adam and Justus and Simon. It will be interesting to see if she ends up with one of these men in future books. I am looking forward to reading the next one. I really enjoyed this book - although there seemed to be a lot of loose ends - maybe they will all resolve later in the series. I'm sure there's more to Adam - else why introduce us to his former partner. I really liked Adam, at times I really liked Justus, same for Simon. Definitely didn't like Samil or Merc! Will be interested to see where all this leads. What bothered me most was that she never got her cat back! I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series. no reviews | add a review
Zoe Merrick lived an ordinary life until late one night, she was brutally attacked and left for dead. She was found, covered in blood, and taken in by an ex-soldier named Adam. Zoe didn't just survive that night - she underwent a physical transformation and acquired unexplainable abilities. Severed from her old life, her frustration grows as she tries to comprehend what's happening to her. Serendipity leads her to Justus De Gradi. He's handsome, arrogant, and not entirely human. Through Justus, Zoe learns the truth about what she is and where she belongs. A young Mage is vulnerable in this dangerous world. The only way Zoe will understand her power is by putting her trust in a stranger and accepting the protection that he offers. When her immortal freedom is threatened by the one man who has a right to claim her, Zoe learns the price of freedom...and the value of loyalty. No library descriptions found.

Listened to audio narrated well by Nicole Poole. I liked how she brought each character their own voice.
Zoé Winter Merrick has no idea why she was attacked and murdered on her way home but her life was changed irrevocably. She woke in a body bag and ran. She was found and taken in by Adam Razor, a former military man trying to live quietly off grid.
As Adam nursed her, over three days she recovered and physically changed and had no idea why or what she had become, but they become close.
She suffers from nightmares as she keeps hearing her attacker's voice claiming to be hunting her down, demanding she return to him.
When she is discovered by Justus De Gradi her life changes again as she finally discovers what she is and that she must leave Adam to be trained.
Justus De Gradi is a charmer and also a big jerk. He may have become Zoé's Guardian for her protection but he's an ass about it. Things only get better for Zoé once Justus' friend Simon shows up and gives him a reality check.
Just as Zoé aka 'Learner' starts to blossom, her maker appears to the Council to claim her and she is terrified.
The world of the Mageri is full of wonder and danger and in this book we mostly see the ugly side of being a Mage. Zoé always seems to be under some sort of an attack and is almost killed and it will take Justus, Adam and Simon to come up with a plan to save her from the evil that is her maker.
This is an interesting new world but there were some inconsistency problems. While some parts were predictable I did enjoy most of the story even if I didn't always like the main characters.
