I laughed out loud several times, especially at the beginning, the mystery was clever without being ridiculous and the characters felt true to how they have been established on the show. ( )“Mr. Monk Goes to Hawaii” is a fun book. With this book, Lee Goldberg takes Monk to an exotic locale that would not be possible to do on the television show. Natalie has to go to Hawaii to a wedding, and Mr. Monk tags along since he feels he can not handle himself at home alone without her. To avoid a situation like “Mr. Monk and the Airplane”, Adrian Monk once again takes the medicine that makes him less worried about phobias but, in the words of Dr. Kroger, “makes him a lousy detective”. It was fun to once again see Monk on medication, something he has not done since “Mr. Monk Takes His Medicine”. Monk acts like a completely different person when on the medicine. Once the medicine wears off though, that is where the fun begins. Monk stumbles onto an accident that he feels is a murder. He has to deal with his phobias in an environment to which he is not accustomed, and solve the case in the process. I laughed out loud when Monk is confronted with lizards in a restaurant. My sister lived in Guam for a while, and through her I know that those little green guys are everywhere over there. It was amusing to see how Monk handled himself in that situation, which suffice to say, was not very well. Mr. Goldberg is still coming to terms with the characters as this is only his second book in the series. So, there are some instances where Mr. Monk does things that he would not do in the show. Still, those instances are few and far between and it did not spoil my enjoyment of this book. This series stays so true to the characters on the show and is completely entertaining. I really enjoy this series and find myself suprised to do so. So many books that are based on tv or movies read like a script and are not fun, but this series breaks the mold. Natalie heads to Hawaii to attend her best friend's wedding and is shocked to see that Adrian Monk has decided to come as well. After they attend the wedding that isn't a wedding they come across a dead body, solve that murder(?), solve a rash of break ins, figure out a drug ring, find another body, and finally solve both murders for real. An excellent example of how a mystery should be written. Too fun. Quirky Monk solves a murder and exposes a psychic while teaching the hotel employees how to clean. 0.050 seconds to build listing no reviews | add a review
Amazon.com Book Description (ISBN 0451219007, Paperback)Some people think Hawaii is paradise, but Monk knows that danger, like dirt, lurks everywhere. Look at Helen Gruber, the rich tourist who took a fatal blow from a coconut. The police say it fell from a tree, but Monk suspects otherwise. His assistant Natalie isn't exactly thrilled about Monk's latest investigation. It was bad enough Monk followed her on vacation, and now it looks like the vacation is over. Smooth-talking TV psychic Dylan Swift is on the island and claims to have a message from beyond-from Helen Gruber. Monk has his doubts about Swift's credibility. But finding the killer and proving Swift a fraud-all while coping with geckos and the horror of unsynchronized ceiling fans-may prove a tough coconut to crack.(retrieved from Amazon Fri, 24 Apr 2009 07:57:52 -0400) The first test round has been closed.
