3925. Magnificent Missourian The Life of Thomas Hart Benton, by Elbert D. Smith (read 22 Aug 2004) Back in Dec 1945 I read with much appreciation a biography of Thomas Hart Benton, but not till I finished this book on Aug 22, 2004, and looked at my list of books read did I realize I had read a prior biography. I have known the author of this book and so felt I wanted to read it. The book got better as it went along and the final chapters are very well-done. Benton was born in March 1782 near Hillsboro, NC and died 10 Apr 1858 in Washignton, DC. He went to the University of North Carolina but was expelled because he was a thief! He was in the Senate from Aug 21, 1821 to Mar 3, 1851--the longest consecutive service as a Senator up to that time. This bio is very favorable to Benton and I have to agree he was a dominating figure and was often right. ( )
