This was a fun book to read because of the imaginative monsters at work in the book. The poems went with each monster as you flip the pages. ( )

This collection of poetry is about monsters who are staying in a motel. The author writes the poems in a very childlike manner. The poems are meant to be spooky however they are not. The illustrations are done in watercolor. This would be a fun book to read to students everyday during the month of October in preperation of Halloween. ( )

(easy, poetry). Apparently Douglas Florian became inspired to write children's poetry after reading a funny poetry book in a flea market. Some of his early poems he created after reading the flea market find are in Monster Motel. I found the monsters he created to be imaginative yet have human elements to them where you couldn't help but love the monsters anyway. His illustrations are enjoyable to look at and are watercolor. I thought it especially clever how he did a watercolor picture of himself as a monster on the back flap of the book jacket. The back cover of the book has a shy little monster peeking out of a tea cup. Florian invites you to step in to his monster motel and get to know his beastly critters, but also warns you that you may not want to leave! He was right about that! ( )
