A story about the 'gods' of old and their immortal life intertwining with modern-day humans. The power struggle of a father wanting to be remembered by mankind (by killing those who don't obey) and a son who wants nothing to do with his evil family and would give up everything in the world, even immortality, to be with the woman he loves.

The book took awhile to get into, very similar (I thought) to Lord of the Rings genre. Once it got moving, though, it was hard to put down. The writing style jumped around a lot and sometimes caused you to have to go back and re-read a paragraph at the initial switch so that you could switch over characters in your mind. The ending...not all that great. Very much a cliffhanger headed towards happiness. ( )

Fascinating modern take on Norse legends, and a real page- turner! ( )

eh, good for a mental nap curled in the sun

I actually found it an enjoyable read for lounging on the sunny lawn near science world after work. The dogs and children frolicking around me did not distract from the fairly content free urban folklore. I think I enjoyed the supporting creatures more than the main characters though: Skripi the wood wight, Grid the giantess, and Loki the conniver. ( )

I remember really enjoying this book when I read it as its a really different kind of fantasy story, to the ones I normally read.

So Basically without spoiling it, Victoria who is scientist has run from her broken engagement in England and gone to an island called Othinsey in the norwegian sea as she has got a job in the Weather Station there.

She starts to get spooked out on the island of Othinsey when she finds the island familiar as if knows the place and strange things start to happen. ( )

Victoria Scott is a member of a meterological research team on Othinsey, an island about 200 nautical miles off the Norwegian coast. The island has a history of violence and legends of ghosts, or something like ghosts.
Vidar is one of the host of the Aesir. He's looking for a woman he lost years ago, he's distanced from his father Odin and trying to learn how to live without violence. Odin wants him to live because he is fated to avenge him at Ragnorok.
A romance with a difference this is interesting and very involved with the Norse Myths. It reads like Kim Wilkins did her research and just warped things a little to suit her. ( )

Description: Taking a job on an isolated island in the Sea of Norway, scientist Victoria Scott wants a quiet place to finish her doctoral thesis. But Victoria isn't prepared for the strange shadows outside her cabin window, the rumors of a murderous hag who sucks one's soul during sleep, and the tales of mythic monsters lurking in the forest. More frightening than the island's nightmarish mysteries: to Victoria, everything is hauntingly familiar. When an enigmatic stranger appears on the island, Victoria's sense of foreboding peaks. For she learns that they are connected by a conflict centuries old#151;one that can end only with her death#133;
