Fiction. Mystery. Thriller. HTML:

The compelling thriller that launched the career of best-selling novelist Stuart Woods in an anniversary hardcover edition.

In the bitter winter of 1920, the first body is found in Delano, Georgia; the naked corpse of an unidentified teenager. There is no direct evidence of murder, but the body bears marks of what seems to be a ritual beating. The investigation falls to Will Henry Lee, a failed cotton farmer newly appointed as Delano's first chief of police. Lee's obsession with the crime begins a story that weaves through the decades, following the life of a small southern town and the role of three police chiefs in unraveling the crime. Chiefs is the best kind of thriller, where the investigation plays out against the drama beneath the surface of a seemingly placid community, seething with the pressures of race, love, hate, and; always; political power, extending from the town fathers all the way to Washington, DC. With a new foreword by the author, this volume will be a collector's treasure for all fans of Stuart Woods.… (more)

Addictive read. Excellent plot but...I had difficulty plowing through the heart- and gut-wrenching racism throughout the novel; from the 1920's to the 1970's. This outrageously, inhumane, harmful, hate is maddening, and stressful.

Chiefs reflects Woods' efforts to get the history, politics, setting, and characters right. Timing and characterizations were done well.

Hard to imagine a crime of that magnitude continuing for so long.

His first book and it was a doozie of a thriller. During the post WW2 years in middle Ga. Race a big issue and in comes a new black sheriff.. That coupled with a mass murderer that goes undetected for 2 decades. Great read ( )

I had forgotten that Stuart Woods once could write. The story of three police chiefs in three different decades in the same small Southern town. It is a deft exploration of character and clashing cultural mores that are, alas, still in play today. Good storytelling; good character development; occasionally thought-provoking. ( )

Really good. Grabbed me from the beginning. An interesting story that spans decades of police chiefs before bringing the villain to a just end. Great character development, glimpses into wise counsel, and periodic moments of action which made the whole thing an entertaining read. ( )
