Part of a family of magazines, this one focuses on teens and young adults and their experiences growing up. The reader will be captivated by the intriguing and colorful artwork on the cover and pleased by the lack of advertising. However, such a beautiful cover means that it is almost disappointing when the reader opens the magazine to find a distinct monochromism. The content of the pictures is the same—while they match the story, they only enhance that one aspect of the story, which can seem more repetitive than enlightening. This contrast seems to be a theme throughout the magazine. The table of contents is the same—whimsically and creatively organized, enchanting the reader, though it is unique in the magazine, and makes the viewing of the actual contents almost a letdown. Some biographies are entertaining—one writer’s states that he “nearly stepped on an alligator” once—while others are the usual. The stories and poems featured are written by teens and also famous authors, and the content includes hard-hitting topics such as divorce as well as apparently pure fantasy. Such variety will appeal to some, while others will find themselves wishing the editors would choose a focus on one or the other. ( )
