3540. Prayer at Rumayla: A Novel of the Gulf War, by Charles Sheehan-Miles (read 14 Feb 2002) This is the first fiction I have read on the Gulf War and is a searing, stark, and bitter book, with an unexpected and dramatic ending. The tape-recorder-like language is obviously authentic, tho nevertheless annoying. I did not find this book "fun" to read, but it is a very powerful account--tho one wonders what a veteran of trench warfare in World War One would have thought of the mental turmoil which obsesses the central character's reaction to a 100-hour war..
