Little Hedgehog, whose first adventure, One Snowy Night, also took place at Christmastime, returns in this fifth picture-book devoted to his activities, finding that he has a lot of preparing yet to do, in order to be ready for the Christmas party he is throwing. Aided by his mouse friends, he collects and arranges all-natural holiday decorations for his house, setting out later to find gifts for his soon-to-be guests. When he gets lost in the darkening woods, it looks like this will be one less-than-happy Christmas night, until Fox happens along, and the two make their way back to Little Hedgehog's home...

Like its predecessors, One Christmas Night was a sweet little book, with a kindhearted erinaceous hero, a heartwarming story, and adorable artwork. The sparkly elements - the Christmas star, the snow on the trees - will make it especially appealing for young readers who like a more interactive reading experience (some of the other Little Hedgehog books have "touch-and-feel" elements instead), although even without them, it is still engaging. Recommended to younger children who enjoy animals stories, or are looking for cute Christmas tales. ( )
