Each chapter can be read any time you need more information or you can read the whole book to gain a detail review of the different types of retirement plans. This is one of the things I like best about NOLO books; you don’t need to read them cover to cover to gain useful knowledge. I got this book from LibraryThing as part of their book give away. ( )

What I liked about this book is that each in the beginning of each chapter chapter is a section entitled "Who should read chapter __". This great since you can read what you desire and skip area that do not apply to you or your family. I found that this book reminded me of a Dummies book, without the yellow cover and funky print. I did find the contents to be helpful and informative. With headings such as, skip ahead, tips, caution, helpful terms and resources. ( )

This book does exactly what it says in the title--offers clear explanations of how one can withdraw money from various types of retirement accounts: how taxes are assessed, what penalties are incurred and under what circumstances, and so on. As an individual reading this book in order to gain information on a subject of which I know precious little, I can't compare its merits to other similar offerings, but I can say that it takes a difficult subject and presents it in a concise, easy-to-understand fashion. It's definitely a good place to start for anyone hoping to get a better understanding of the subject.

Amazon.com Amazon.com Review (ISBN 0873374487, Paperback)

IRA's, 401(k)s & Other Retirement Plans, by financial specialists Twila Slesnick and John C. Suttle, is a solid self-help legal look at a critical back-end issue that most of us blissfully ignore until we absolutely must confront it. The authors themselves admit it is not a compelling page-turner, but rather a comprehensive resource that at some point should prove indispensable to everyone with a retirement plan. They describe the various plans available--including Roth IRAs, to which an entire chapter is devoted--focusing on distribution rules, associated taxes, and potential penalties. They offer details on early distributions used to pay higher-education expenses or health-insurance premiums (which are not subject to taxes, under certain explicit conditions), distributions you must take during your lifetime (when they begin, how they're computed, what happens if your beneficiary changes), and distributions made after an account holder dies (largely concentrating on administrative procedures that could help you avoid unnecessary financial loss). Helpful appendices include relevant IRS forms, notices, and schedules as well as life-expectancy tables. --Howard Rothman
