The American Association for School Libraries’ blog, or AASL blog, is a multi-authored, up-to-date approach to school library news and theory. At first, readers may be a little overwhelmed by the scope and layout of the site – not the most attractive interface (bit cluttered and lengthy), or the most intuitive (users will have to fend for themselves with only two category tabs) – but digging a little deeper will get readers to informative and interesting posts that encompass quite a bit of the school librarian’s world as it exists today. Current takes on Common Core Standards, internet filters, and control censorship are a few among the vast archives that make up the AASL blog. The language is “newsy” and at times a little dry; still there is tons of information packed into every post and with some patience and perseverance, blog readers will walk away with an arsenal of facts and figures. Though some strings seem a bit fluffy and meaningless (see Jeff DiScala’s “AASL11 Hashtag Heaven” posted during the 2011 AASL Conference in which he mostly, and repeatedly, thanks hashtag posters for their, well, hashtags) other postings are packed with great info and the feeling that there really was passionate motivation behind writing them (check out Jennifer Laboon’s August 2011 post, “How Will We Save Our Profession? Reflections from a Texas Librarian”). Overall, the blog is an informative and necessary tool with a few speed bumps hidden here and there. Recommended for all School Librarians. ( )
