But at the end of March 1945 Prime Minister Churchill made a point of mentioning the contribution of General George C. Marshall, the Chief of Staff of the United States Army, in a telegram to Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson in Washington DC: "Pray give General Marshall my warmest congratulations on the magnificent fighting and conduct of the American and Allied Armies under General Eisenhower, and say what a joy it must be to him to see how the armies he called into being by his own genius have won immortal renown.
