A short (142 pages) book but it dragged on forever.

Rare book dealer looking for a rare set of letters. Some allusion to mystery and danger.

Could not get excited by either the plot or the characters.

I have another 2 by th same author. This will make it difficult for me to pick one of those up any time soon.

"The terrible door into the past..." F. Scott Fitzgerald

This is an odd, rather confusing little book. The colleague/semi-friend of a rare book dealer in London dies after being hit by a motorcycle, and several people make overtures to the book dealer to acquire a volume of letters, known as the "Ibiza letters", as they were written by a derelict Englishman from that island near Spain. There are several encounters with people connected to the letters, and some hints of danger and one definite assault on the book dealer. We're given to understand that there is a "Mr. Big" who doesn't want the letters found or sold.

The information on rare books & manuscripts, and the people who deal in them, is more interesting than the mystery, which is rather vague despite a bit of racing & chasing around England after the elusive letters. It was first published in 1964, but seems to be set around 1955. Not bad - just odd. ( )

I don't know about 'The Terrible Door' rather it's 'The Terrible Book' that concerns me. How this ever got published in the first place is a mystery - no wait a moment,in the introduction we are told " George Sims ... became a dealer in rare books and manuscripts..." He obviously had connections to publishers ect. Mystery solved. ( )
