A good idea for a plot is not enough. Stilted dialogue and wooden characters make the story unconvincing start with, and if you are going to make forged pages inserted into an 18th century journal a major plot point, you have to make the excerpts at least superficially convincing as 18th century English. It takes more than scattering a few examples of 18th century slang here and there. ( )
