Loading... Inhale: A Just Breathe Novel (edition 2012)by Kendall Grey
Free Kindle Download 10/9/2012 Finished this last night - as in I stayed up way later than I should so I could finish it. I couldn't put it down. This book takes a deep dive into Australian folklore and aboriginal culture. Although I can understand some readers' reluctance or a feeling of being lost as there wasn't much preface given before you are literally dumped into the Dreaming / Dreamstime, if you keep an open mind and keep reading, the explanations are given over time in a splendid example of universe building at its best. There are two parallel story lines to this book. One takes place in the Dreaming and the other in Realis (Reality). They are wonderfully interwoven and are both well executed. Both of the main characters are strong, believable and have great chemistry. There are also a few twists and turns that will have you wondering just who is on whose side until the end and beyond. The writing it tight. The author has a talent for tossing phrases. A warning - this is a series and the story of Zoe and Gavin continues on in the second book. The author did give a "happy for now" for those of you who demand it. I think this may actually be my only negative for this book. I didn't like the HFN - I would have preferred for the ending to ((Don't click unless you read it!)) For her to find the bird at the bar and not find Gavin until the book 2. With the way book 1 ended, although I am curious about the storyline for book 2, I am not hungry for it. That is probably my only negative. Originally reviewed here. Inhale came onto book radar (bookdar?) when I saw a rave review from Kara on Great Imaginations, followed, pretty soon after, by another fabulous review by Giselle of Xpresso Reads. Of course, being the person that I am, I only scanned their reviews, because I really do not like to impact my reading of books with reviews unless I'm making up my mind. I read enough to know I was interested, but, going into it, pretty much all I knew was that it had hot sex and whales. From that, I was really expecting a slightly better than average romance novel. I thought there would be tons of hot sex and that the whales might be some sort of background story. Actually, Inhale is an epic paranormal romance. The paranormal elements are crucial to the story, and the romance feels like a part of that, rather than the other way around. I definitely wouldn't categorize this as a romance novel if I had to choose just one category. The opening chapters of Inhale were a bit confusing. You're just sort of thrown into this fantasy world that was VERY different from anything I've read before. It's a bit complicated, and I really don't think I can do a great job of explaining, so I'll just say this: it may take a bit, but it will be worth it. Grey's world draws on some familiar themes but combines into something very unique and fantastical Zoe and Gavin are both enthralling and strong characters, though they suffer a wee bit from instalove. That didn't bother me that much because of the circumstances under which they come together. They meet and get to know one another in the Dreaming and dreams just don't follow the same logic as Realis. There's also the small matter of the elements pretty much pointing out their feelings for them, although their bodies do that too. So, yeah, there are some seriously hot sexy times in here, not quite as many as I expected, but judging from some word counts from Exhale, I'd say there will be more. Most of the other characters I don't feel like I got to know particularly well, except for Scarlet (who I want to punch in the face. From the brief bits I've gotten of them, Zoe's whale research team (the unfortunately and accurately-named Randy excluded) is totally awesome. Those four women make such a great time, and I love how much Adriene has Zoe's back. Oh, and I have to point out, too, how utterly fantastic it is that the women in this novel definitely come off as, if anything, stronger than the men. The character I really want to know more about, though, is Sinnder. I get the feeling that he knows a lot more than he's letting in. Not only that, but I suspect he has his own secret agenda and depths. Scarlet seems like your average mean, power-hungry, evil wench so far, but Sinnder definitely seems like he has the possibility to be the bad guy you really, really root for (like Eric from True Blood/Sookie Stackhouse). If you have a thing for bad boys, this is so your book, because Gavin definitely falls under that heading too. In case you missed it in the description, Kendall Grey is donating all of her proceeds to programs for whales, which is just so sweet. I loved the whales in the book, and I was so awed by and envious of Zoe's connection to them. That definitely took me back to The Ring of Endless Light, if you read that as a child. I've always felt that all animals are more connected and similar than we humans like to think, so this was perfect for me. The most fun aspect of the novel I think was Grey's writing. She is so incredibly sassy and funny, and unapologetically foul-mouthed. And I just love it. I actually wanted to point out what I almost used as my favorite quote, because it's so Kendall Grey (I didn't end up using it because it's from the Acknowledgements): "Last but not least...To everyone who said no, this middle finger is for you. :-)" For those of you afraid of self-pubs, don't worry; Inhale is well-written and well-edited. The Kindle version is only $2.99, which is totally worth it. I have zero doubt that the series will only get better from here, as we learn more about the characters and the fantasy world. Fyres could not keep me from reading more of this trilogy! This book was incredibly written. Ms. Grey has a way with words. From the world building to the character building, it did not lack in the least. The only complaint I had with Inhale was how it started. It forces you to jump right into the double worlds of the Dreaming and Realis almost instantly. It left me quite confused for the first couple of chapters, but once it clicked, it all made sense. I really enjoyed the relationship between Zoe and Gavin. They meet in the Dreaming and instantly fall for one another. Although, Zoe just thinks of him as a "dream guy" and doesn't believe that he really exists outside of the Dreaming. I wish they could have met in Realis sooner than they did but I completely understand the reasoning behind it not happening. I'll just have to read book two to dive into their relationship more! I also loved reading so much about the wales. Zoe is a Whale Researcher, so Ms. Grey really dips into the whole marine life scene and it was interesting! Towards the end, there is one scene where Zoe actually talks with a wale ... and it talks back. That was a little overkill in my opinion, but it did fit the story. As for Gavin, yum. The way Gavin is described (rocker, tattoos, bad boy) allowed me to fill my imagination with my favorite guitarist. Now reading this book and picture him in my head the whole time ... perfection. The Fyres (bad guys) do everything they can to destroy the relationship between Zoe and Gavin, but they always find their way back to each other. One way or another. Love conquers all right? I am so eager to get my hands on the next book! I can't wait to find out what happens next!! FYI: This book does have lots of language and a couple of graphic sex scenes. So if that isn't your thing, you probably won't like this book. And I wouldn't recommend it to anyone under 18. As a bonus, The author will donate all profits from the sale of the JUST BREATHE trilogy to programs that educate people about whales and the challenges they face. *I purchased my e-copy from Amazon when it was on sale for FREE!! (Check it out, it may still be available!) Since I was a little girl I have always been a huge fan of whales, I find them to be fascinating creatures, so I like that this book has something to do with whales as well as having profits donated to whale education. I have to say that of all the books with paranormal elements in them that I have read, this one has a really unique premise, which is always refreshing to me. I have to say in terms of the world building, I think it might be too complex for some people to grasp onto right off the back. There is a lot of information that goes into explain how the word works within the book, and in a couple of spots I felt like the author was guilty of a couple of info-dumps. There are a lot of things people might need to reread a couple of times to make sure they got the meaning. I think the world building aspect needs a bit of work in that respect, although it is a unique world, so props to the author for their imagination. The romance level is very heavy in this book, there is definitely some hot and steamy sex scenes within the book. That being said they didn't feel forced, like they were just their for the sake of having them. They felt organic for the characters, and I think it is easy to really enjoy the character both separately and even more when they are together. The pacing in the book is really good, so it's an easy read in that respect. I would have enjoyed the book more if the world building had been better fleshed out, but overall I think it was a solid book. I think anyone who is looking for a unique take on urban fantasy would enjoy this book, especially the people who love paranormal romance, this book would be right in their wheelhouse. Kendall was the only featured author I had not yet read so I had to rectify that. Once I learned it involved dreams and whales and elementals, I was SOLD!World-building: WOW! I am wicked impressed with Kendall's world-building skills! The world she has created is intense and it took me a while to acclimate to it all. In this world, you have the Dreaming (dream world) and the Realis (real life). You also have Aers, Wæters, Fyres and Erthe elementals. These elementals have different functions and personalities, but we get a major dose of the Fyre elementals, whose personalities are exactly what you imagine: passionate, fierce, dangerous. The elementals feed off of the Wylding (humans) in the Realis, but need skin contact in order to absorb elements; their life force. In the Dreaming, it's an entirely different ballgame. However, elementals aren't supposed to be in the Dreaming. When they invade the Dreaming and mess with the Wyldlings therein, the seriously mess up the Balance. As Kendall states here: "Though the Dreaming is the collective unconscious of the human race, events that transpire there affect people in real ways." In other words, an elemental might suck the real life right out of a human! Therefore, Sentinels, beings with equal parts of water, air, fire and earth, have to guard the Dreaming and protect the vulnerable Wyldlings.Confused yet? I was! But tell me that isn't damn interesting? It is seriously original and really sucks you in to the possibilities of it all. Wicked impressed, I tell you!Characters: Gavin, our hero, is an Australian musician with tattoos and a lip ring. Rawr! I do love me some bloody fun Australian colloquial language. The use or arse and bloke had me smiling. Anywho, Gavin's conflicted about his past and struggling to go on with life when he meets our beloved heroine, Zoe, a whale biologist. Their encounters are anything but normal. Gavin is a Sentinel, and first meets Zoe in the Dreaming. Needless to say, their lives intertwine and their connection becomes undeniable. Gavin has lost his way and Zoe is just the spark to bring him back online. *waggles eyebrows* Note: See my favorite quote below. Gavin is full of protective spirit and when he regains his passion, his fire made me sweat! I absolutely loved watching his transformation. He has so much potential and I am excited to watch his growth. All of his growth. ;) Zoe is one hell of lady! She is fiercely passionate about her job, but her past experiences have taken a toll on her ego. She struggles to regain herself, though you would never be able to tell that from the outside. Zoe is admirable for standing up for her beliefs, regardless of the consequences. There are other characters worth mentioning: Scarlet and Sinnder, Fyre elementals up to no damn good. Scarlet is one hell of a bitch, wrapped tightly in leather and fuck you. She is behind a master plan of which Zoe stands so firmly in the way. And of course, Scarlet has history with Gavin, but she is not yet ready for it to be considered history. She is out for blood. Scarlet is so easy to hate but she added such steam to this story. While I'm not a fan, I am totally digging her role and its effects.SINNDER! Ha. Oh my. *fans self* Sinnder is Scarlet's lackey, or so she thinks. As Kendall described him here: "Sinnder’s an enigma. You just don’t know what the hell he’s about, what his goal is, or whose side he’s really on." I completely agree, as you never truly know his motives. His way of dealing with Scarlet and her unwanted advances towards him is sooooooo sexy. I love those scenes the most! Um, kitchen scene, anyone! Woot! He is just sexy without even trying. He bleeds sex. He is a Fyre, after all.Whoa. Hot. The kind of hot that could make a woman feel like she needed a month-long vacation in a nunnery after one night with him.

Before I agree to read or review a book I usually check them out on Goodreads, read the blurb from the back cover check the reviews and see if it is something that I would be interested in and Inhale had all the things I usually like in a book. It was Urban Fantasy the blurb sounding interesting and it was really well reviewed. Ultimately I just could not get into this book and the only reason I finished was because I agreed to do a review. The world building was original and very different than what I usually read in UF. The main characters, Zoe and Gavin were both likable enough. I just got lost in keeping track of who was what elemental, the difference between wyldings and Archelementals and the whole hierarchy that went with it. I didn't find a glossary until I got to the end and to be honest that wouldn't have made a difference to me if I have to flip back and forth between a glossary and the page I'm reading to follow a book it's too much work for me. I will give the author points for originality but the whole thing just didn't work for me. I know it is book one in a trilogy but I just can't see myself reading the next two books. Find a full review at Rumor Has ItWOW! I have been utterly blessed the last few weeks to read pretty awesome or nearly awesome books. This one right here folks, AWESOME! INHALE is the first book in the Just Breathe Trilogy by Indie writer Kendall Grey. We follow Zoe Morgan, a whale biologist as she discovers the world of Dreaming. (Shout out to all my biologists out there. Can you guess what I’m majoring in?) We also happen to meet Mr. Perfect aka Gavin Cassidy a Sentinel who must protect Zoe at all costs. What they don’t know is that they are connected in a special way and must work together to save the world of Dreaming and Realis. First off, you are thrust into this new world. You don’t get asked if it’s ok, there is no easing into it… YOU ARE GOING AND WHAT?! Right from the beginning there is action and it lasts all the way until the end. What I liked:• This beautiful world. You could tell that the author took time and care into really developing this concept. As complex as it is in theory, there is a simplicity in it that allows you to just accept it for what it is. If you die in Dreaming you die in Realis and you don’t necessarily have a say so. Key players involved are the Elementals that have all gone whack. There are so many ways to complicate this but by the end of the book you are like wow that could totally happen and that makes sense. (See? Simple).• Zoe. Yes, Gavin is cute. Yes, Gavin has potential for greatness because hey, he backs his woman up no matter what BUT Zoe is kick ass! She has not had a perfect life by any means and she herself is not perfect. However, she is a strong, smart, independent, proactive, no nonsense type of gal that doesn’t freak out about impossibly possible things. I LOVE HER! • ALL of the characters. Not only are the main characters pretty kick ass, so is the rest of the crew. Every single one of them is likeable, well developed and intriguing. I have my eye on Sinnder. Umm Hmm. • The relationship that develops between Zoe and Gavin. The sex came about instantly at the very beginning of the book but in a realistic way. The relationship develops throughout the book again in a most realistic way. By the end of the book you are rooting for them in every way imaginable.• The writing. There was this one part in the book where Dreaming was described and it was so poetic it had me in a dreamlike state. It reminded me of the part of “heaven” in the movie What Dreams May Come. Like being in a painting that hasn’t completely dried. Then you have the great action scenes and the passionate scenes! Making you root and wish you were having those kinds of dreams too… All of the writing in this book flows and it makes you feel things when you need to feel them seamlessly. A true talent.• Gavin’s lyrics. WOW! • NO LOVE TRIANGLE! Enough said.• THE ENDING! This book came together nicely and it ended just as nicely. With the perfect ending. The new terminology takes some time getting used to but you will find yourself totally immersed in this new world almost instantly. This book is ridunkulous in the creativity and originality department. You will experience hot under the collar moments, laugh out loud moments and tear up every now and then. Kendall Grey has a way with words and you really need to pick this one up if you haven’t already. All the profits from book sales will be donated to whale research. It can’t get any better than this! Please check out this beautiful site where you can find out more about this world prior to reading the book! Just Breathe Trilogy What a wonderful and unique story! I’ve not yet read anything like this book, and it was a fun change to venture into the Dreaming (our dream-state). In fact, every night I go to bed I hope to find my own Gavin waiting there to rescue me! Ahem, no luck yet… This story is about Zoe, and she loves whales. She has such an affinity with them, its almost as if they speak to her. And even better, she’s just gotten a job in Australia tagging them along with her team. Perfect. But just before she’s to leave for there she starts having these crazy dreams. And in these dreams is a man. He doesn’t have a name, but hey, that’s partly what she likes about him. He’s hot, tattooed, pierced, and he is all man – and even better, he is totally into her. Am I the only one reaching for some warm milk to get to sleep a bit faster? Gavin is a Sentinel. Sentinels are tied to the elements of earth, air, water and fire. His job is to keep the elements balanced. But now Sentinels need to protect us regular humans (Wyldings) in our dreams. Because if you die there, you die in real life. Fyres (fire elementals) are finding their way into the Dreaming and are wreaking havoc in the worst way. Ok, so maybe I don’t need that milk afterall… Gavin’s next mission is Zoe. Everything about Zoe is a mystery to him (including her name!), but somehow she ties into the future safety of the world. Hey, no pressure here Gavin. Just go save the world with little to no information. Easy peasy! This book had some really fresh and fun ideas. I’ve not read any books that mainly take place in our sleeping mind. Everything felt so real. It helps that Zoe is a lucid dreamer and that there is a chemistry between our two main characters that could make the ocean boil. Oh yeah, talk about tension! But even aside from that the scenery was beyond gorgeous and it really felt like a place I’d like to dream about myself. There were times I was a bit confused about the elementals and who had what powers and certain beings having multiple powers… it became a bit much for me. The beginning had a lot of information and at times it was a lot to soak in. But once you got the hang of it and figure out the hierarchy of everything it was just like riding a bike. But all of that was totally worth it because in the Dreaming anything you think of can just be. I mean, you are dreaming afterall. Kind of makes regular life outside of your sleep not quite compare! ”Her sudden self-consciousness melted his heart. Did she have any idea what she did to him? Damn, she tore him down and tied him up inside. “ This book had a lot of interesting aspects, not to mention a slow building romantic tension that will leave you hooked and waiting for the next book. To torture you even more, Gavin knows that Zoe is a real person out there in the world. Ahh! It was killing me! I was happy and sad and anxious all at once! I found myself racing to the next scene with them together, I couldn’t get enough. I definitely recommend this book. And even more awesome---- Kendall Grey will donate all profits from the sale of the JUST BREATHE trilogy to programs that educate people about whales and the challenges they face. So definitely put this on your “To Buy” list and help the whales Read review At Smash Attack Reads! http://www.smashattackreads.com/2012/05/smash-reviews-inahle-2/ Smashtastic Entertainment Quickie: Wicked world-building, intriguing characters, and action-packed plot.
