Having failed several classes in her sophomore year, carefree California schoolgirl Linda Duncan flees to her aunt's home in London to attend the same private (they call it public) high school that her mother and aunt attended. The book recounts her school year in London and the cultural differences she encounters both at school and at home. Freezing from the change of climate, horrified that she can't wear makeup at school and has to study five kinds of mathematics at once, and disturbed by the sex segregation of teenagers at the local community center, Linda makes a lot of mistakes at first but eventully adapts to her new surroundings. And, of course, there are the two dashing, young American college students she picks up at the American embassy to help her adjust.
