This is a fine book and James Dillon was deserving of a quality biography. It is very well written and argued. Manning traces James’ family ancestry in both the Young Irelanders (John Blake Dillon) and in the Home Rule Party (John Dillon). Eventually he analyses James own political evolution, initially as an Independent and subsequently in the National Centre Party, the Blueshirts and in Fine Gael, whom he lead for some years. His time as a politician, Minister and Party Leader are analysed at each stage. However, one failing of the book is that Manning tends to analyse all of the achievements of Dillon throughout his career but gives little critical analysis of policy decisions that backfired when in government and political tensions in Fine Gael throughout his career. Regardless the book is an extremely worthwhile to anyone’s bookshelf. ( )
