Rumer Godden has been my favorite writer for as long as I can remember and I was excited to find that her books were back in print. And doubly excited to find this novel which I had never read.

So I'm sorry to say that this one fell flat -- the characters don't quite gel. Its hard to figure out who in the story was most important, and there were just too many loose ends. And the wonderful use of words which particularly characterize her later works is missing.

I'm such a Godden fan that I have multiple copies of some her other works -- I can't see that happening with this one unfortunately
