The traditional nursery rhyme with hilarious commentary and illustrations. (Dog to cat: "I know you didn't mean to [kill the rat by dropping a hammer on his head]. But you realise that he'll come back to haunt you, don't you?" Cat: "Oh. Now you've really got me worried.") ( )

When Jack starts to build his own do-it-yourself house he finds it isn't quite as easy as he had expected. On the left side of each spread are the traditional verses, while on the right, the characters act out the story. This book was shortlisted for the 1995 Smarties Book Prize.
