This story starts out positive with two best friends, Katie and Jennifer that do everything together. It becomes kind of heart wrenching to watch Katie feel so hurt, but I think it is a great lesson to discuss with kids. Children struggle with friendship dynamics and I like how this story deals with that. I think it would be great to use in kindergarten when children are often just learning how to maneuver new friendships. Katie and Jennifer have been best friends forever. They play with each other everyday at school. One day, Jennifer chooses to play with Roy instead of Jennifer. No matter how much Katie tries to convince Jennifer to play with her, she keeps playing with Roy, at recess, Katie feels alone. Jennifer and Roy continue to play, running right past Katie, making her very jealous. She wanted to say mean things to Jennifer and Roy, but she was afraid of crying. When it is time to hold hands with a buddy to walk back to class, Jennifer chooses to hold Roy's hand instead of Katie's. Katie yells at Jennifer. Arabella, a normally quiet and shy girl, takes Katie's hand and comforts her. Jennifer has a hard time accepting a new hand and a new friend. But within minutes, they are friends and off to play together. A great book for ages 3-6. (Pierce College Fort Steilacoom Library) no reviews | add a review
