I loved Angleberger’s Origami Yoda series, and was pleased to see this on the list of nominees for the Sasquatch Award in Washington State. As a librarian I was pleased to see our profession being represented by librarians who know ninja kicks. It is all because of the fake mustache Casper, Lenny’s genius friend bought. Now Casper has turned into a bank robber accumulating millions of dollars in his quest to be president. The humor is definitely for kids! I had kids waiting for it before it was ready to check out and I bet they’ll like it much more than I did. (grade 3-6) ( )

by Tom Angleberger
Published in April, 2012 by Amulet Books

Though the subtitle seems to say it all,
WHO: Lenny Flem, Jr. and Jodie O’Rodeo…
WHAT: save “…the U.S. Presidential Election from a Mad Genius Criminal Mastermind,”…
WHERE: a plot hatched in the fictional town of Hairsprinkle…
WHEN: during the 2012 election season…
WHY: so that Lenny’s erstwhile best friend could seize power of the country…
HOW: by way of a clever disguise.

+ Fake Mustache is silly and fun with absolutely no grounding in the realm of possibilities whatsoever!

Yep, that’a not a typo: The Plus and the Minus are the same! Fake Mustache is something of a tall tale wherein Tom Angleberger has taken elements as far flung as trolleys, a Wonder Horse, a child TV star, novelty toys and cell phones… and spun a fantastic and amusing story; but utterly unbelievable. There’s no device that transforms Fake Mustache into a plausible scenario which is not a bad thing, just makes this more of a book for pure entertainment value than anything else.

SEX/-UALITY, DRUGS, VIOLENCE: A little flirtation and a kiss between the protags; no drugs; no contact violence
OTHER: I borrowed a hardback edition of Fake Mustache: Or, How Jodie O’Rodeo and Her Wonder Horse (and Some Nerdy Kid) Saved the U.S. Presidential Election from a Mad Genius Criminal Mastermind (by Tom Angleberger) from the Jackson County Library System (Southern Oregon.) I receive no monies, goods or services in exchange for reviewing the product and/or mentioning any of the persons or companies that are or may be implied in this post. ( )

While I loved The Strange Case of Origami Yoda, this book falls to thrill me. I didn't enjoy the slapstick humor and I thought there was no depth to the characters. This book was recommended by a very reliable source, but it did not impress me. Its one redeeming quality is that it might appeal to reluctant boy readers. ( )

Fast-paced, entertaining silliness. ( )

When Lenny's best friend, Casper, buys a fake mustache with his gift money, suddenly the world is in danger. While wearing the mustache, Casper becomes an evil villain complete with bank robberies, fixed elections and a plan for world domination. Only Lenny seesm to be able to see through his mustache to the 12 year old underneath, but no one believes him - no one but Jodie O'Rodeo, who will hopefully help him save the day.

I did not enjoy this book - it was too whimsical and far fetched for my taste, even for a fun comic-y boy book. ( )

Lenny Flem Jr. is the only one standing between his evil-genius best friend, Casper, and world domination as Casper uses a spectacularly convincing fake mustache and the ability to hypnotize to rob banks, amass a vast fortune, and run for president.
