North, the Shepherd and Tickler engage in some of the most charming discussions of matters of taste that have ever seen print. Whether debating the relative beauty of this or that natural scene or the proper way to stroke one’s calves to create the ideally handsome male leg (before trousers came to hide them, it was men and not women who showed off their legs in the Occident), these men real or fictive – who knows or cares? – are always civil, witty and a lesson in dialect done right (unlike most of the awful dialect by humorists in the US). The glossary in the end is a treasure.
