Claire Malloy needs a place to stay while her apartment is being fumigated and a customer Dolly Golightly offers her the use of her house while she's out of town. Soon Claire's duaghter Caron and her friend Inez find a dead body by the pool but the body soon dissappears. The story gets a bit convoluted with mobsters and FBI agents but a good read. ( )

I'm a huge Joan Hess fan, and orginally fell in the love with the Maggody series. Since I've started the Claire Malloy ones, I do find myself appreciating the two different series equally. With that said, this had the usual cast of quirky characters - and the usual cast of random people that suddenly appear in Claire's life and causes more than a little chaos. Fun as always, though I have enjoyed others more. I didn't see the "reveal" coming - though I never do know who her villan is. Not one of my favorites as far as the villan is concerened, but Claire and Caron where predictably nosy and annoyed - respectively. ( )

While bookstore-owner Claire Malloy’s apartment building is being fumigated, she conveniently gets a house-sitting gig in the lavish home of one of her customers, Dolly Goforth. Dolly’s house is a mini-mansion, with pool – and Dolly provides enough food and drink to last Claire, along with her teen-age daughter Caron and Caron’s friend Inez, for the two weeks Dolly will be visiting her sister in Dallas. It doesn’t take long, however, before the body of a man with a bullet hole in his forehead appears in the yard. Caron’s call to 911 brings the police, but by the time the cops arrive, the body is gone. When the body reappears, police aren’t likely to take the 911 call seriously, except for Claire’s police-detective boyfriend Peter Rosen. Unfortunately, the body does another disappearing act.

Meanwhile, two twenty-something nieces of Dolly’s late husband Bibi show up on the doorstep looking for a place to stay while their car is being repaired. Soon, there are more people in and out of the house than an Oscar Wilde farce including the body, which finally stays put long enough for police to arrive.

If you attached a reality meter to The Goodbye Body, it would mostly register in the “no way” category, with an implausible plot, way-too-witty dialogue and a wild conclusion. But that’s just what Joan Hess fans hope for and The Goodbye Body won’t disappoint. Along with the usual craziness are solid writing and a plot that moves along at a fast pace. What puts it truly over the top is the image of sarcastic Caron and pimply Inez practicing the tango for a school talent contest.

BTW: I’ve been reading the Claire Malloy mysteries as long as Joan Hess has been writing them (the first was in 1986 – and The Goodbye Body is number fifteen) and it seems as if Caron has been in her awkward teen-age years a very long time – Farberville, Arkansas is in a totally different time zone.
