1933 and the world is changing. The Great War still lives on in memory but in Russia the Communist Party is strong and controls life, in Germany a new party called the Nazis is becoming more powerful, in England the class system is still evident and in the US life proceeds as usual. The next generation of the families introduced in The Fall of Giants take centre-stage in this book and Zelig-like a member of each is present at every major incident as the world hurtles towards another war and comes out the other side.
What works so well in Follett's epic novels is the research that takes place. By using families across four major nations Follett is able to ensure that a family saga and a historical narrative are woven together. The stories are engrossing and history is cleverly woven in to educate in an engaging manner. in fact the only jarring notes tend to be the badly written sex scenes! ( )

WINTER OF THE WORLD(THE CENTURY TRILOGY #2) BY KEN FOLLETT is the second in the Century Trilogy takes the reader to 1933 with the same five families, all from different countries. In this book we set the focus on the second generation & we get a deeper focus of their lives.
Spanning thru WWII, we still get to meet some very famous "real" people & meet new fictional characters, both good and bad.

I have so far enjoyed this series because I feel now that these characters are like family or friends, which is attributed to the excellence of how Mr Follett portrays them. As a historical fiction junkie I cant wait to get the time to finish the trilogy. Even though we bounce from country you will have no problem keeping up with the plot or the characters as Mr.Folliet is molding and binding them together into what I hope to be a great conclusion to the series. Loved this continuation of the next generation as they struggled through the second world war. Terrific character development and ongoing interesting stories with each of the characters kept me engaged right through to the end. ( )

This book sweeps from 1933 to 1949 and covers the huge changes that the world lived through viewed through the eyes of people from all sides of the political divide.

From the rise of Hitler and throught the second world war and beyond the research shines through and the accuracy is such that it is at times hard to tell fact from fiction.

The scenes where people face great moral dilemmas in order to advance the war are particularly powerful.

Sadly though this is not as good a book one in the trilogy to me. Firstly there is just no need for all the sex scenes and in great detail!! Also although appreciating hat the characters lives need to interact it just feels too contrived and un-natural at times.

Very topical to read just now with the problems in Crimea showing that some things sadly never change.

I look forward to the third instalment. ( )

"He fills his pages with fascinating characters and then uses the great events of this time to make an exciting plot."
"The result, as in “Fall of Giants,” is an honorable piece of popular entertainment and a consistently compelling portrait of a world in crisis."
"It makes the biggest tectonic shifts of its era — the struggle between Communism and Fascism, the irreversible march of science toward nuclear weapons, the laying of groundwork for the coming cold war — feel momentous indeed."

Ken Follett follows up his #1 New York Times bestseller Fall of Giants with a brilliant, page-turning epic about the heroism and honor of World War II, and the dawn of the atomic age.

Ken Follett’s Fall of Giants, the first novel in his extraordinary new historical epic, The Century Trilogy, was an international sensation, acclaimed as “sweeping and fascinating, a book that will consume you for days or weeks” (USA Today) and “grippingly told and readable to the end” (The New York Times Book Review). “If the next two volumes are as lively and entertaining as Fall of Giants,” said The Washington Post, “they should be well worth waiting for.”

Winter of the World picks up right where the first book left off, as its five interrelated families—American, German, Russian, English, Welsh—enter a time of enormous social, political, and economic turmoil, beginning with the rise of the Third Reich, through the Spanish Civil War and the great dramas of World War II, up to the explosions of the American and Soviet atomic bombs.

Carla von Ulrich, born of German and English parents, finds her life engulfed by the Nazi tide until she commits a deed of great courage and heartbreak. . . . American brothers Woody and Chuck Dewar, each with a secret, take separate paths to momentous events, one in Washington, the other in the bloody jungles of the Pacific. . . . English student Lloyd Williams discovers in the crucible of the Spanish Civil War that he must fight Communism just as hard as Fascism. . . . Daisy Peshkov, a driven American social climber, cares only for popularity and the fast set, until the war transforms her life, not just once but twice, while her cousin Volodya carves out a position in Soviet intelligence that will affect not only this war—but the war to come.

These characters and many others find their lives inextricably entangled as their experiences illuminate the cataclysms that marked the century. From the drawing rooms of the rich to the blood and smoke of battle, their lives intertwine, propelling the reader into dramas of ever-increasing complexity.

As always with Ken Follett, the historical background is brilliantly researched and rendered, the action fast-moving, the characters rich in nuance and emotion. With passion and the hand of a master, he brings us into a world we thought we knew, but now will never seem the same again.
