Fiction. Science Fiction. HTML:

Captain Ivan Vorpatril is happy with his relatively uneventful bachelor's life as a staff officer to a Barrayaran admiral. Cousin to imperial troubleshooter Miles Vorkosigan, Ivan is not far down the hereditary list for the emperorship. Thankfully, new heirs have directed that headache elsewhere, leaving Ivan to enjoy his life on Komarr, far from the byzantine court politics of his home system. But when an old friend in Barrayaran intelligence asks Ivan to protect an attractive young woman who may be on the hit list of a criminal syndicate, his chivalrous nature takes over. It seems danger and adventure have once more found Captain Vorpatril.

Tej Arqua and her half-sister and servant Rish are fleeing the violent overthrow of their clan on free-for-all planet Jackson's Whole. Now it seems Tej may possess a secret of which even she may not be awareâ??a secret that could corrupt the heart of a highly regarded Barrayaran family and provide the final advantage for the thugs who seek to overthrow Tej's homeworld. But none of Tej's formidable adversaries have counted on Ivan Vorpatril. For behind Ivan's façade of wry and self-effacing humor lies a true and cunning protector who will never leave a distressed lady in the lurchâ??making the ultimate sacrifice to keep her from harm: the treasured and hard-won freedom from his own fate as a scion of Barray… (more)

Nope. Despite the fact that I had read something of this author in the past and liked it, I stopped this one after about 10 pages- did not like to familiar tone. ( )

I have a big lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. There was absolutely no illusions for me before opening this book. After "Diplomatic Immunity" and almost yesterdays read of "Cryoburn" there could be none of such. And having read this three books I want to say... no, I can't. I just can't. I don't know how. I would not do that. Not before I read enough of this to overcome all the memory of the first 12 books. Not before I could overcome myself.

Truth is... over course of the years this series was written author has changed, world has changed, I've changed... I can not dismiss it. Change is universal human right. We are born with it. We should not dismiss it for each other. I do not want to dismiss it right now.

And for the rating... The real downside for this book is the lack of inspiration. And the fact that it actually happened before "Cryoburn". ( )

August 2019 reread:
I liked this entry in the Vorkosigan series more this time around. It was good to get to know Ivan better and I found his in-laws from Jackson's Whole made me laugh.

Original review from 2015:
A fun entry in the Vorkosigan series featuring Miles's cousin Ivan Vorpatril. I do wish that I had read (or, rather, listened to) this before Cryoburn though, as it is clearly set prior to it. While I enjoyed this very much, this one had less social commentary in it and so wasn't quite as good a book as some of the others in the series in my opinion. ( )

It's a bit odd to think of a Vorkosigan book that doesn't have Miles as the main character. But once I started reading, I hardly missed him. I haven't had this much fun since A Civil Campaign.

It was really good to see more of the players who have taken more of a backseat in previous books, including Ivan's formidable mother and his um-stepfather Simon. (Also, it's Simon. I love the man.)

But this is the book where Ivan gets hitched. But Ivan being Ivan, the marriage is done spur of the moment, in order to keep himself and his bride from being arrested. The comedy of politics, legalities, and cultural misunderstandings is amazing.

I laughed, I squeed (multiple times), I cringed in sympathy, and I fell in love with Ivan in a way that I had never done before. The inside of his brain is fascinating, and I'm really glad Lois finally told his story. He also had this rather interesting perspective on his cousin:
"Miles was…the thing is, he was afflicted with a severe birth injury. He grew up pretty much crippled, so he poured all his frustrated energy into his intellect. Since the Vorkosigan family motto might as well be, Anything worth achieving is worth overachieving, the effect was pretty frightening. And it worked for him, so he did it some more."

If you're a Vorkosigan fan, you'll love this. If you're not a Vorkosigan fan, go back and start from the beginning and when you make your way to this book, you'll love it too. ( )

First words
Ivan’s door buzzer sounded at close to Komarran midnight, just when he was unwinding enough from lingering jump lag, his screwed-up diurnal rhythm, and the day’s labors to consider sleep.
Quotations
'I do not have a claustrophobia thing. I have a perfectly rational dislike of being locked up in small, dark, wet spaces by people trying to kill me.' (Ivan)
His eye fell on Simon, watching this with his mouth gone wry. 'And Simon. What the hell?' The Why was I blindsided? look was very clear in the Emperor's eye, which Ivan could only be grateful was not turned on him. Yet.

Simon gave him a beleaguered head tilt. 'You know that long lunch appointment I made with you for tomorrow?'

'Yes...?'

'I should have made it for yesterday.'
