This was a good mystery with a mix of humor and history as Falco, his wife Helena, and various family members go to Athens, Olympia and Delphi, Greece. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, Saturnalia. ( )

Davis's later books suffer from the problem of many successful series: having married Helena and risen to the respectable middle class, Falco has little left to strive for and even less to prove. This entry is more enjoyable than the last few, but is dragged down by a diffuse plot, inconsistent characterization, and the author's desire to end on a bang.

Also, I'm predicting now that Aelianus and Albia will wind up together. ( )

These are always funny, and Lindsey Davis writes with a great voice. The blend of classical culture and deliberately anachronistic speech makes the characters seem more alive. The book feels painfully well researched and probably accurate, and yet the parallels to certain contemporary murder cases won't be lost on anyone.

The twist at the end is sick but funny.

Flaw: It isn't clear whether the murderer is actually arrested or charged with anything, by that point the characters are already charging into their next adventure. ( )

Latest (I think) in Davis' successful series of novels about Marcus Didius Falco, a private eye in ancient Rome (this book set in 76 AD). Generally good stuff here, as he and his glamorous wife tag up with a tour group going around Greece to try and solve a couple of unexplained deaths. Not totally convinced by the plotting and resolution, but enjoyed the ride and the scenery. ( )

Book description

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0312357753, Mass Market Paperback)

It’s A.D. 76 during the reign of Vespasian, and Marcus Didius Falco, a Roman “informer,” has achieved much in his life. He’s joined the equestrian rank, allowing him to marry Helena Justina, the Senator’s beloved daughter. But now he’s just been hired to undergo a dangerous mission: to pry his brother-in-law Aulus, a scholar on the way to study in Athens, away from a murder investigation involving two dead women at the ancient site of the Olympic Games. Traveling to Greece under the guise of being tourists, Falco and Helena visit the country’s classic sites in order to investigate the suspicious goings-on and shady dealings of Seven Sights, a fly-by-night travel agency. What begins as a risky expedition becomes sinister when Aulus, too, goes missing in what becomes Falco’s most complex and high-stakes case yet.
