... over at the "Biblical History" message board. I've been listening to the NIV Bible. I'm also referring to and reading The New Oxford Annotated Bible which is excellent. As I've said in several other posts elsewhere, these books (the Old Testament) sure have a ton of violence, sexual ... I have different versions of the Bible that I prefer for different reasons and settings. As a study Bible, I like the New Oxford Annotated Bible with Apocrypha. For general reading purposes, I tend towards the New Revised Standard Version.
However, I really like the poetry and sense of ... Is there a good, annotated version of the Torah that someone would recommend? I have The New Oxford Annotated Bible. I also have been interested in reading the Bible but would only want to read these books once. After all, the whole thing is so Gosh-durn long :) ... Egyptians told him. The New Oxford Annotated Bible: New Revised Standard Version is used in our Mennonite seminaries and is the version read during services. No. 7 -- could The New Oxford Annotated Bible with Apocrypha help you? I second the New Oxford Annotated Bible, although you may also wish to look at the HarperCollins Study Bible.
(The standard translation of academia is the Revised Standard Version or the New Revised Standard Version.)
I can't recommend the Archcheological Study Bible, it is too ... I use the New Oxford Annotated Bible, which has the New Resived Standard Version and the Apocrypha. The explanatory footnotes, introductions, essays, and maps (available in the hardback edition) are very good, especially if you are interested in the literary and historical aspects of the texts.

I have a NRSV Study Bible from Augsburg/Fortress & I have a mass market paperback NRSV. I have each one of these for different purposes & reasons. The mass market paperback ... ... of the edition... even though there are differences & sometimes major differences. But that is my opinion. I have the New Oxford Annotated NRSV Bible with Apocrypha third edition. I know that my edition differs from the second edition and has different editors, but I would rather see ... The version one uses depends a lot on ones reasons. The New Oxford Annotated Bible, New Revised Standard Edition is fine for study but I prefer the Jerusalem Bible when it comes to reading. When you go to Mass you are most likley to hear The New American Version. The weakness of Catholics has always been their skimpy knowledge of the Bible. I found the following useful:

Debates over versions seem like a waste of time. This is the study bible that most universities use. I don't have a problem with The New Oxford Annotated Bible, New Revised Standard Edition Ok, Let me try this again a. The books that most affected me was actually reading the bible itself. I would also recommend the Harlot by the Side of the Road and How We Believe. Both of these books are very eye opening. ... that any one book turned me into a heathen or as I perfer it a hertical humanist. There are several that influenced me-The Bible-sit down and actually read it. The Harlot by the Side of the Road-all those things that never get talked about in Sunday School. Canticle for Leibowitz-just ... ... book again, I'd encourage you to read it slowly, in chapters, over a long time - you can read it almost like many read the Bible, not cover to cover, but story by story.
