a very well written and engaging read, great history. ( )

A very well written account of the life of Maria Volkonsky, who followed her exiled Decembrist husband to Siberia in 1826 after the failed uprising against the new tsar, Nicholas I. The book paints very well the sufferings of the Decembrists and their families, the petty vindictiveness of the tsar and the bureaucracy and the expansiveness, glories and horrors of the Siberian countryside. A great read. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0374237271, Hardcover)

Beautiful, cultivated, the daughter of a hero of the Napoleonic wars, Maria Volkonsky had been married only one year when in 1825 the tsar sentenced her husband to life imprisonment in Siberia. Despite her family's and the tsar's opposition, Maria was determined to join her husband in exile. She was more than halfway there when the tsar decreed that she could never return from Siberia.
