This is the well known myth of Pluto kidnapping Proserpina to his the Underworld, to be his bride. In protest, Ceres, the mother of Proserpina and goddess of the Earth, withdraws into a cave to mourn and refuses to permit crops to grow. Humans beseach the gods to intervene which they do. They force Pluto to release Prosperpina for 3/4 of the year. The 1/3 of the year that she must reside with Pluto, her mother returns to the cave and thus, we have winter.
