In The Jerusalem Inception, Avraham Azrieli tells the tale of a young man losing his faith while the still relatively young state of Israel struggles to withstand enemies at it's borders and misguided fanatics within. Between the historical events taking place in Israel in the mid '60s, Azrieli creates an intriguing story of espionage, passion, deception and devotion you just can't put down. Jerusalem Gerster was the son of an influential rabbi, but when a surprise visitor from his father's show up unexpectedly, his whole life changes. Jerusalem becomes embroiled in plots beyond his understanding and plays a pivotal role in ensuring Israel's future sovereignty-and survival. Azrieli's depiction of events fits seamlessly into the history of the region while bringing the gravity of the situation to life and providing a perspective unmatched in any dry historical account. This is my second novel that I read by the remarkable Avraham Azrieli. The first was “The Mormon Candidate” and I could not get enough of that novel. He is such a talented author so I immediately wanted to read another one of this works and chose the Jerusalem Inception. Just by reading the first paragraph, I felt I was transported to WWII and it is due to Azrieli’s writing! He has such a way of creating a believable atmosphere and the reader really does feel that they are witnessing with the characters in the novel. He accomplishes this by providing such wondrous detail. The novel is well-researched and you can tell that Azrieli took quite a bit of time investigating the many historical events in the novel especially the 6 day war which is another setting that is the primary focus of the novel. Azrieli has a rare ability of creating realistic characters and presenting them with such comprehensive human flaws. Each main character in the “Jerusalem Inception” goes through trials that shape them and then it is a wild ride on how they interact with each other. This is a story with twists and turns and really holds you at the end of your seat. Great Read!! Following ultra orthodox Lemmy through his journey from Talmudic scholar, to rebellious free thinker to military infiltrator was nail biting. His character is both brave and vulnerable. The fictional and historical facts are so cleverly interwoven that it's easy to believe this is how history was formed. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and only hope there is a follow up book! This book took me completely by surprise. It has an espionage mixed with Nazis, with a little dose of violent beginnings that I didn’t expect. This book has an isolationist undertone to it but only concerning the host nation trying to stay safe in a troublesome time. Then you get a curve ball thrown at you a few chapters in that sets the tone for the rest of the book. Nazi money is just an extra added bonus. I personally like books that start in one era and changes pace to move into the future with the same players being reunited even though this reunion definitely felt forced and was used for all sorts of dramatic effect. If you like religion sprinkled with spy then this is definitely for you. Overall an excellent read. no reviews | add a review

From Israelis in Nazi Germany, to the Six Days War in the Middle East, not only was this an excellent Bond-esque thriller, but also an interesting history lesson.
I knew nothing of the historical events used in the novel, but by the end I had learned greatly.
All in all, a superb piece of work. I can't wait to read more of Azrieli's work. ( )
