It is about four girls who have been friends all their lives. Now in their teens, they discover this remarkable pair of jeans that looks great on all of them, in spite of the fact that they have very different figures. When the girls are separated for the summer, they decide to send the pants to one another. Each girl faces a significant crisis, dealing with complex issues such as family, friendship, romance, and even death. I handled these issues with depth and delicacy. The book is more sensitive than the movie. ( )I liked this book because it followed the movie and it kept me reading when i actually got into it A great story that follows the close friendship of four girls over the course a summer as they share a found pair of jeans that just so happen to fit all four of the very different sized girls. This book discusses real life situations such as death, love, friendship, family relationships, conflict between friends, etc. Cute coming of age story about girls who are best friends. Over the summer the Pants come to represent the support of the sisterhood, but they also lead each girl into bruising and ultimately healing confrontations with love and courage, dying and forgiveness. Lena finds her identity in Greece and the courage not to reject love; Bridget gets in over her head with an older camp coach; Carmen finds her father ensconced with a new fiancée and family; and Tibby unwillingly takes on a filmmaking apprentice who is dying of leukemia. Each girl's story is distinct and engrossing, told in a brightly contemporary style. Like the Pants, the reader bounces back and forth among the four unfolding adventures, and the melange is spiced with letters and witty quotes. Ann Brashares has here created four captivating characters and seamlessly interwoven their stories for a young adult novel that is fresh and absorbing. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell
