When Samantha Jones (Sam), the single-parent of 4 year old Tyler, hooks her ancient tow truck up to a sleek, black MBW late one night, she finds a wounded man tied up in the trunk. There is hardly time to consider her dilemma before she is unceremoniously dumped in behind him. This unlikely meeting of two strangers randomly bound together in danger forms the crux of the novel, but is also the grist for the author's romantic subplot, which at times rivals the action around it. Sam soon realizes that she is in big trouble as she has landed in the middle of an FBI undercover scheme. Her handsome trunk-mate is not all he appears to be but the one thing they both know is they are likely to soon be dead.

"Shiver" provides dramatic chases, betrayals and the simmering, if reluctant attraction between Marco and Samantha. Of course, the purveyor of romance cannot resist the opportunity to place her characters in a love/hate dynamic that ratchets up the consequences of the chase, a misbegotten romance that will not be denied in spite of the odds. Though not a great literary feat, Robards' storytelling skills are well-honed, plot edgy, her ability to tap into women's psyches impressive.

One of the best books I have read by this author and I really did enjoy it...so, 5 stars. ( )

I like Karen Robards; I think she is a very good writer. And I liked "Shiver." It's a highly entertaining book that goes at breakneck speed. The action never stops, and yet the romance that is woven in has time to develop in a believable way. Samantha Jones is single mother to four-year-old Tyler, trying to make ends meet by running a towing company and repossessing cars in the dead of night. One night the car she repossesses has a man in the trunk - alive but badly injured. From this point, Samantha's life becomes inextricably intertwined with that of the man in the trunk - Daniel Panterro, an undercover FBI agent.

My only negative comment about this book is that the dialogue written for four-year-old Tyler isn't quite right. He sounds more like a 10- or 11-year-old boy. At times Robards gets it right, but most of the time Tyler just sounds too old to be four. It's a little distracting but not so bad as to make me knock the book down from 5 stars.

I really enjoyed this book! ( )

Sam (Samantha) is a single mother of a 4 yr. old son, Tyler--living pay check to pay check by being a repo while her next door neighbor keeps her son.

While driving a tow truck though a bad part of town she finds a guy in the trunk of a flashy new BMW (Daniel). She saved his life but she does not trust his motivates. However, Danny is undercover FBI and now he has put Sam and her son in jeopardy.

Sam can take care of herself and a very protective mother and knows how to use a gun! With ruthless killers stalking their trail, Sam has to trust this sexy stranger.

The audio book was not as intense as Hunted (highly recommend); however, as always, Karen Robards knows how to entertain her audience and brings steamy sex and suspense.

That night, Samantha Jones was doing what she always did: just trying to get by. Left to make her own way on the mean streets of East St. Louis, the pretty twenty-three-year-old single mother supported herself and her son as best she could by repo-ing cars. When she hooked her junker of a tow truck up to the BMW she'd been sent to haul in, the last thing she expected was to find a beaten, bloody man in the trunk--or to be catapulted into a terrifying fight to survive. Danny Pantrero was minutes away from dying when Sam found him. Bleeding badly from a gunshot wound, he'd been snatched from protective custody by a vicious gang of drug runners who would stop at nothing to see him dead. With his life on the line, Danny takes Sam hostage. Forcing her to help him, he tries to make her understand that now she's a target for the killers, too. When they invade her house and threaten her son's life, she finally understands: there's no going back. She and five-year-old Tyler go on the run with Danny in a desperate effort to reach the authorities who have promised him protection before the killers can silence all three of them forever. In the face of harrowing danger, Sam has no choice but to trust Danny with her life--and, more importantly, her son's. Against her will, she starts to fall for the once-menacing stranger, and discovers a depth of passion she never imagined she could feel. But what Sam doesn't know is that Danny has a secret that could destroy them all.… (more)
