I must admit I skimmed the sex-scenes,especially the chapter-long ones, and could have been quite happy with less in that area. Otherwise, I enjoyed the vampires and the world Adrian created around them. I would have liked to see a bit more of the politics and action, more of the world that provides the backdrop to the sex in this novel. Kellan was almost too much of a headstrong, defeatist idiot, though to make the plot work without more non-romantic development, I get that he had to be like that, just as Mira had to be so hot-tempered and undisciplined that one wonders how she ever managed to finish training for the position she holds in the beginning of this story. A lot of the characterization came across as contrived, not just the main characters, but the plot made up for them enough for me to give this one 4 stars. ( ) 7/21/20 Just finished my reread and uping this to 4 stars. Definitely a better read the 2nd time around. I was looking forward to this one. I knew it was a jump 20 years in the future from the last book and that is actually one of my favorite parts of the book. To see Nathan, Mira and Kellan all grown up and being a part of things. There was plenty of suspense and action. All the mysteries and intrigues are there. Although I love the Midnight Breed series, this was not one of my favorite of the series. My biggest problem was the redundancy throughout the book. Way too many words used over and over again to explain Mira and Kellan's actions and feelings. If at some point this repetitiveness had stopped I would have given her 4 stars. I think all those words could have been better used to make all the other characters and situations more vivid. Because, in truth, it is my ONLY problem with the book. But for me, it was work to read this one. It didn't hold me tight in its grip like the most of the books in this series does. Listened to audio narrated by Hillary Huber. **Various Spoilers** 20 years after the First Dawn. believed dead, Mira finds Kellan. After seeing a glimpse of the future Kellan makes choices that end up making his dire future come true. Mira is the optimist believing they will find a way. While this could be a good book for others I found myself unhappy with the book, most of the way through. The story seems to meander, and in the beginning it was hard to stay engaged. It's also very clear that his choice to lead a rebel group played into making the vision he saw become reality, when he should have been either a) working to avoid it or b) using the time he had to enjoy his life with Mira. I like reading about protective alpha males but Kellan comes across as less confident more I'm taking credit and responsibility for all failures, which comes across more narcisstic than heroic. I wanted to like this story but halfway through I wanted to quit listening. I also didn't understand the purpose of the rebel group, their leader was a Breed and another was dating a Breed, so what exactly where the rebelling about? It was frustrating seeing Mira change from the initially strong warrior to behaving almost childlike, immature and insecure. **SPOILER** About 3/4 of the way into the book, we are made aware of a new threat, Opus Nostrum. A group of thirteen, who keep their identities hidden accept for one and supposedly the group is made up of both Breeds and humans. This group claims they want to bring a new order and peace, determined to shape the world with their own vision, killing many to bring their own version of peace. This also disappointed me because it is so similar to Dragos' agenda, even if there's a surprise reveal at the end. Overall I LIKE this series, but this is the first book that didn't work for me, I truly hope the next book brings back the strong characters and storylines I've come to expect from this author. The only group preserving the fragile harmony is the Order, an elite cadre of Breed warriors dedicated to protecting humans and vampires alike. Raised among the Order, Mira has always believed in the warrior's code of swiftâ??and even lethalâ??justice. But the one thing she desires more than the Order's hard-won acceptance is Kellan Archer, a sexy but troubled Breed fighter.
