It’s a good idea for a book; a classic romance where two people are attracted to each other then pulled apart by circumstances and eventually brought back together. A plot which is apparently tireless as it’s so often repeated - and in this case, four bumbling (but well-intentioned) angels add a light-hearted touch that mostly works well. Apparently this is one of a series about these particular angels, but I haven’t read any of the others, and it wasn’t necessary to do so. This novel stands well on its own.

Unfortunately, I didn’t feel that the characters had much depth. The conversations all seem rather stilted, and I never felt that I knew what was going on in their heads, despite the author describing their feelings regularly, sometimes more than once. I was certainly interested enough to keep reading - I wanted to know what would happen - but the somewhat predictable ending was a bit sudden and the change of heart of one of the main characters did not feel realistic.

I don’t feel inspired to read any other books in the series, although it was comfortable enough bedtime reading over the past week or so. Recommended in a low-key way to anyone who enjoys very light, innocent fiction; but it’s not one I shall be reading again.

This is the first book I've read with the angels, Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy. I liked them as it sort of reminded me of the "Touched by and Angel" TV series. It was a nice sweet story for Christmas and perhaps I'll read more of these in future Christmases. ( )

I purchased this e-book last year and just getting around to reading it. Not my typical book; however, thought it would be nice to read around the holiday season.

Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy are three angels joined by Will-an angel-in-training. Their job is to help humans realize they can do more with God’s help; however, they are not to interfere (however, they tend to get involved). The four angels gather in Times Square for the ball drop at midnight.
A little silly; however very light read with a message. Lucie (chef) Aren (food critic) prepare for a new romance in the New Year. It is all about God’s timing with the help of some meddling angels.

Book description
In this joyous and whimsical holiday novel, Debbie Macomber rings in the season with the return of Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy, delivering laughs, love, and a charming dose of angelic intervention.

Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy know that an angel’s work is never done, especially during a time as wondrous as New Year’s Eve. With an apprentice angel, Will, under their wings, they descend upon Times Square in New York City eager to join in the festivities. And when Will spies two lonely strangers in the crowd, he decides midnight is the perfect time to lend a heavenly helping hand.

Lucie Farrara and Aren Fairchild meet after bumping into each other—seemingly by accident—in Times Square on New Year’s Eve. They immediately hit it off and find they have a lot in common: Lucie is a burgeoning chef and Aren is a respected food critic. But just as quickly as they’re brought together, another twist of fate tears them apart, leaving Lucie and Aren with no way to reconnect.

A year later, Lucie is the head chef of an acclaimed new restaurant and Aren is a successful columnist for a major New York newspaper. For all the time that’s passed, the two have not forgotten their one serendipitous evening—and neither have Shirley, Goodness, Mercy, and Will. To reunite the young couple, the angels cook up a brilliant plan: mix true love, a second chance, and a generous sprinkle of mischief to create an unforgettable Christmas miracle.
