A very nice book for junior high/high school age students who are curious about life in the Air Force. This is one book which moves in our library quite a bit. The division of picture to text ratio is better for older readers,so this would be a harder read for struggling readers. I would recommend this as a nice addition to any library which has fans of military books. ( )

This was a good resource for any one considering a career in the air force.

A good book for those considering enlisting in the Air Force or any branch of the US Military, but not overly helpful for those considering doing ROTC in college. ( )

This book is a great introduction to the realities of serving in the USAF, both for prospective cadets and their spouses and/or parents. There are a couple of chapters that get the reader to thinking about why he or she might consider the Air Force, and how it compares to other opportunities that may be available. The greater part of the book is dedicated to the actual enlistment process, to help dispel any misconceptions or misunderstandings.

The book allows the reader to make an informed decision about how they might fit in to the USAF, and as such is a valuable resource for anyone who works with teens (or, like me, has a teen that is interested in the USAF)! ( )

In this clearly-written, informative handbook for young adults, author Snow Wildsmith has done young readers a great service by detailing all necessary information about joining the U.S. Air Force. I read this book because I wanted to share it with the Boys and Girls Club kids that I volunteer tutor, but found it extremely interesting in its own right, even though I am most certainly USAF not candidate material.
Most impressive about Wildsmith’s work are her organization and analysis. The chapters about “things to consider” for potential enlistees, their parents, and the spouses were excellent. She leaves nothing to chance, and, indeed, poses questions such as “I want to serve in the military but only part-time and/or don’t want to have to move away from where I am living” with the possible answers “yes,” “no,” and “maybe.” She incisively and honestly analyzes each of the possible responses as to how realistic that motivation to enlist actually is in the larger picture. Many young people would benefit from reading those chapters and applying those questions to any career they are considering.
The clear and detailed information in the description of the USAF, the enlistment process, and of basic training will leave no possible recruit in the dark about what he or she can expect through the entire scenario. Wildsmith pulls no punches and doesn’t sugar-coat any part of the enlistment process. She even includes a list of items to take to basic training!
This book, the first book in the “Joining the Military” series, authored by Wildsmith should be a must-read for any young person who is thinking about enlisting. The author has done an outstanding job in making a possible hazy goal a clear reality, and anyone who is considering enlisting should definitely read this well-written book. ( )
