I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring! Here's my list of 2008 reads; I actually started the first one on March 1st (I had some issues before then that made personal reading impossible), but I'm still attempting to reach at least 50 by December 31st.

As for me, I'd have to say The Satanic Verses is probably my favorite. It was my first Rushdie and inspired me to seek out the rest of his books. As a religion major, I loved the way he wove the ... Very much looking forward to his newest offering, once I can snag a copy. For now though, I'll offer The Satanic Verses, so continue with the Rushdie 1001 hits. Any takers? #2 Where are you teaching The Satanic Verses? I've had a copy for about 20 years (is that possible?) and pick it up every once in awhile, read the first page, then decide I'm not smart enough for it. I would love some reference points with which to approach it, so I don't miss TOO much. I'll ... I'm sitting looking longing at my copy, but as I'm currently teaching The Satanic Verses, I thought it might be too confusing to read two Rushdies simultaneously. Shame by Salman Rushdie has a lovely gloss on translation and immigration--using the Rubaiyat Omar Khayam to explore what is lost (and gained) in the "translation" of both people and literature. ... have Sophie's World ... so I'll see what all the buzz is about.

I recall an incident where my brother's ex-girlfriend got peeved at me because I had a copy of Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses in clear view. I did not understand that she was Persian in heritage, she seemed like the last person who would be conservative about controversial ideas, ... Finished The Road 03/01/08. Started Rushdie's The Satanic Verses, it's a long one. ... Adventures in Wonderland, which was just as demanding for some reason or other.
I got the same problem when reading The Satanic Verses. I like a good book, but some of them are so good you simply can't read them all in one sitting it appears. You don't put it down because it's terrible, ... ... if other people had such books in their lives. For me, its anything J.D. Salinger ever wrote, the Harry Potter books, The Satanic Verses, American Psycho...I always wonder if these books are going to hold up over time and I liked them all (except HP Book 7) so much the first time I read ... I thought dancingstarfish got teelgee's line with Still Life with Woodpecker. And then I got dancingstarfish's one from Satanic Verses.
So the two lines are (I think) mine:

One of the main characters in indeed female, but not Muslim. I love this book, but I don't think it's quite what you're looking for. The only one of Rushdi ... ... Ground Beneath Her Feet, the main female character becomes a wild, western rock star. You may want to try the infamous Satanic Verses, but I haven't read it myself so I don't know if there are any main female characters.

I am currently reading the Thomas Mann book titled The Magic Mountain. I've enjoyed other works by Mann and I'm enjoying this, but it is "demanding". T ... Alas! I love The Satanic Verses! I was a religion major though, and took a lot of classes on Islam back in the day, which I imagine helped me make sense of the book. The historical story of the Satanic verses is fascinating too, though it only gets mentioned tangentially in the book, as I ... I too have tried The Satanic Verses and not finished it--the strange thing is that it wasn't that I found it boring or uninteresting, I simply felt that I didn't understand the significance of the action. My own personal hate was Salmon Rushdie's Satanic Verses. I found it unreadable and pretentious.
