Wikipedia in English

Book description
This is a strong dramatic story, in which L.T. Meade draws a vivid picture of some singular phases of old English life. The "witch maid" is a young girl much misunderstood in her village; all the kindnesses she does - and there are many - for her neighbours are misconstrued; and she is in danger of being the victim to the foolish superstition of the people. In Esther Quinn, the pretty Quaker, however, she has a firm friend.
