Caroline’s family has had to leave their home in Brookfield to move to a new homestead in Wisconsin. It is largely unfinished, and the family must struggle to clear the woods and make it home. When the garden fails, they get a job cooking for the men working for a nearby rich man, but it isn’t easy work. In the end their little cabin becomes a little home. ( )
