The blurb calls this first novel of Lloyd Jones one with ‘vitality, humour and pathos’. This to me disguises what I ultimately found to be rather a depressing tone. We follow mainly Moss Toller from his school years to the year following school and see how he works for the avaricious and self-satisfied Gilmore at his ‘dairy’ – what would be called a deli in Australia or corner-shop or such-like in England. Certainly Moss is exploited to some extent by Gilmore and there are ugly scenes such as where he is gratuitously attacked by a group of golfers at Gilmore’s incitement. But Moss himself is someone who becomes uglier as the novel progresses, souring as he loses his girl-friend Deirdre who in turn is not an attractive character but one who puts on airs at university, changing her name to Estelle. In a way I guess its tone anticipates to an extent the bleakness of ‘Hand me down world’ where there is a similar view of how self-absorbed people are. This one is lighter, at least in the first half, when Moss is more of a victim but not badly damaged. Still, whatever the tone, I found the novel as a whole very readable – Jones’ style already engaging. ( )
