Jeffrey Ford is easily my favorite writer. His short story collections THE FANTASY WRITER'S ASSISTANT and THE EMPIRE OF ICE CREAM are two of my favorite books. That said, this book does not live up to the expectations set by those two prior collections. Which is unfair. CRACKPOT PALACE is an excellent collection for your average writer. For a writer of Ford's talent, it doesn't hold up as well as other work. Still, if you like inventive short fiction like that written by Karen Russell or Ludmilla Petrushevskaya or George Saunders should work they enjoy here. In fact, I'd recommend starting here and enjoying strong stories like "Down Atsion Road," "The Wish Head," and "Daltharee" before looking up the other collections mentioned in this review. Despite that I feel this collection didn't live up to previous efforts, I always wait with bated breath for a new book from Jeffrey Ford. no reviews | add a review
