Basketball Shooting by Dave Hopla is the only basketball shooting book you need to own.

Hopla comes with enough cred to warrant respect in everything related to shooting.

The book not only includes excellent basics on every part of shooting, but it also delves into the idea of mental preparedness and mental imagery. Both of these aspects are essential in developing the "whole" athlete. Hopla even uses vernacular that goes away from typical terminology and focuses on positive words for the different kinds of shots.

The format of the book was fine, although I would liked to see a few more diagrams with the drills that were included.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in basketball and just about at any level.

This book is for individuals and new coaches. My 12 year old son picked up good tips for foul shooting and under the basket spinouts. He actually increased his percentage in making baskets. The CD that comes with the book is fantastic. The CD is user friendly to find the shot you want to examine. Coach Dave Hopla is not wordy and breaks down the shot along with drills to help practice the shot. The foul shot drills were especially realistic (i.e., practice shooting a foul shot after a sprint - which is reality in a game). (Patty Meinking 1/16/13) ( )

An excellent book for learning the mechanics of shooting the basketball, especially for the younger player. The DVD works well together with the text, and all recommended drills are explained in detail. ( )

This was a great book to get motivated to shoot better. The shooting and the recommended drills were explained concisely and clearly. It would have been nice to see photos of a left-handed player in addition to the right-handed player in the book, and I'd really only recommend this book for right-handed players. The most important points for becoming a good shooter were repeated in multiple sections of the book, which was a plus.

As someone who knows absolutely nothing about basketball (other than believing that just starting professional games at the beginning of the last period, with the score tied at 90-90, would save everyone concerned a lot of time) I'm absolutely not in the target audience for this book. Having said that, it seems a useful guide to playing, if that's your thing. It's a relatively small volume, but as Ben Hogan illustrated in his classic on golf, sometimes you don't need to say a lot to get the point across. Recommended for all lovers of basketball, especially those still young enough to play! ( )
